FAQ

What should I bring to class?

once you book a course with furry tails,  you will receive an Email prior to your first class with our suggestions about helpful things to bring or consider. For now, the essentials are listed below:

  • training treats (see Email for more details)

  • Bed/mat/blanket

  • one or two of their favourite toys

  • Flat collar and lead (no retractable leads please)

  • your sense of humour (this is really important!)

Who should come along to class?

Ideally, anyone who is involved in the care of your dog is welcome. this includes children if you think they are old enough to think about the training and build a relationship with your dog (feel free to bring something to keep children occupied if you think they might need it). For group classes, pLease leave any other pets at home so we can focus on your dog's needs and allow them to learn independently.

What training methods do you use?

We only use positive techniques which are supported by the most up-to-date research on canine behaviour. please see our positive reinforcement infographic for more information. we never use force or anything to deliberately harm your relationship with your dog. If we think you are harming your dog we will intervene, explain our reasons and guide you towards alternative, more helpful signals. furry tails is not a class where negative discipline is used or tolerated.

Why do you use food?

Most dogs respond well to food based rewards, it is quick to administer and can be used to focus attention. If a dog does not respond as well to treats as a reward, we need to find another reward. Toys are usually the best alternative but it breaks the training up a little more as you need to throw the ball or play tug for a short while, that said, if that works better for your dog, we can use this.

Will I always have to treat my dog for the rest of their lives?

No, but if you want speedy, enthusiastic responses for the rest of their lives then yes, treating regularly (not every time), this will help. Look at it this way, I love what I enjoy but if I didn’t get paid for it sometimes, my enthusiasm will wane and I will inevitably lose interest, you can't expect your dog to constantly do an action without a reward.
